Hey Arnold!

Doug's Logo [image]Conceived by Craig Bartlett and animated by Snee Oosh Inc., "Hey Arnold!" was launched in October 6th, 1996 as part of the Sunday Nicktoon line up. With it's unique characters, jazzy soundtrack and occasionally melancholy undertones, it was like no Nicktoon that had come before it or since.

Set in an unnamed metropolis which had aspects of Seattle, WA, Portland, OR and New York City melded together, "Hey Arnold!" was about the day to day life of Arnold and the people that surrounded him. Arnold lived in a boarding house owned and operated by his slightly off-kilter grandparents and filled with various other eccentric folks. At school, Arnold dealt with a multitude of people and problems, and he often played the role of the moral advisor to his classmates, though when he had a conundrum he turned to his best friend since kindergarten, Gerold Martin Johanssen, though Arnold never did figure out how to deal with bully-extraordinaire with a secret crush, Helga G. Pataki.

Arnold prostesting [image]Though "Hey Arnold!" never really hit as a marketing sensation like "Rugrats" or "Spongebob," it ended up being the second longest running Nicktoon ever (Rugrats being the only show to outlast it) with roughly 100 episodes to it's name and a theatrical film. As such, it ended up using that space to take what was considered by some to be somewhat cookie cutter cast and premise, and ended up creating unique back stories for not only the main cast, but also for secondary and tertiary characters.

However, "Hey Arnold!" remains an unfinished story, as a second theatrical film about Arnold finding his parents and therefore bringing closure to the show, will never be produced, nor will the adult/teen oriented sequel series, "The Pataki's," as Bartlett and Nickelodeon have gone their separate ways. Bartlett has since done "Party Wagon." a 90 minute movie/pilot for Cartoon Network about the crazy goings on of the Oregon Trail, and worked as a writer on "Johnny Bravo."
