As
opposed to the crude and absurd humor of "Ren & Stimpy" or the
conceptual 'life through a baby's eyes' humor of "Rugrats", "Doug"
focused itself to a down-to-earth style of humor involving everyday
situations of an typical guy in elementary school. The show followed
the life of Douglas Yancey Funny, an average kid in the town of Bluffington. Doug lived with his parents Phil & Theda, his dog Porkchop,
as well as his beatnik sister Judy. We also see Doug's life at school;
whether it be with his best friend Skeeter Valentine, local bully Roger
Klotz, the jerk principle Mr. Bone or the object of Doug's affection,
Patti Mayonnaise. One of the more unique aspects of the show is the way
the stories were presented; each episode is done as Doug writes a
journal entry, overlooking the events of the previous day. Episodes
included Doug trying to capture a legendary Bluffington monster (the
Neematoad), Doug wasting a weekend of his life because of his new video
gaming system Super Pretendo, Doug & Skeeter winning tickets to see
their favorite rock group "The Beets" and several episodes involving
Doug trying to win the heart of Patti Mayonnaise.
"Doug" was the very first Nicktoon, premiering first
along with "Rugrats" and "Ren & Stimpy" in 1991. The show was the
creation of Jim Jinkins and David Campbell, who created Jumbo Pictures,
Inc. in 1990 for the purpose of producing "Doug" for Nickelodeon.
Beginning at 10 AM on August 11, 1991 (with "Doug Bags a Neematoad"),
the show ran for 3 years and 52 episodes (which were comprised for the
most part of two 15-minute segments). The show ended on Nickelodeon June
19, 1994 with "Doug Graduates/Doug's Bad Trip" (afterwards, a Halloween
special and a Christmas special would be made). Since then, Jumbo
Pictures has produced such series as "PB&J Otter", "101 Dalmatians: The
Series" and even "ESPN Sportsbender". It is also interesting to note
that the original voice of Doug, Billy West, went on to play Phillip J.
Fry and several other roles in Matt Groening's "Futurama".
After the initial cancellation, the show remained out of production for
two years until 1996. At this time, Nickelodeon president Jerry Laybourn
left Nickelodeon to work for Disney. Once there, Laybourn was able to
convince Disney to buy the rights for "Doug" and Jumbo Pictures. Disney
went on to produce another season of Doug for the Disney Channel, called
"Brand Spanking New! Doug" (later renamed to simply "Disney's Doug").
Though some of the original writers and Jinkins himself remained
involved in the show's production, many fans felt the show didn't
maintain the same spark it once had on Nickelodeon. On Disney, the show
ran for 65 new episodes (as well as a full length feature film, "Doug's
First Movie" and a live show, "Doug Live!") for a grand total of 117
episodes.
The original "Doug" currently remains a symbol of the
early days of Nicktoons. The show worked in its own simplicity; a
realistic and likable cast of characters, and a down-to-earth sense of
humor. Thirteen years after its creation, "Doug" remains a nostalgic favorite
for many of its now grown up viewers.
