Diametrically opposed duos have been a Nicktoon tradition since the inception of the line. From the original demented pair, "Ren and Stimpy", to the conjoined duo of "CatDog". Rounding out the trifecta is "The Angry Beavers," which follows the lives of Norbert and Daggett, two beaver brothers trying to get the hang of living on their own, if they don't kill each other first. "The Angry Beavers" was launched April 19th, 1997, well after the Nicktoons line up had established itself. Created by Mitch Schauer, "The Angry Beavers" was basically geared around Norbert and Daggett's sibling rivalery because Norbert's cooler-than-thou, laisse faire attitude and Daggett's stick-in-the-mud dorkiness didn't often gel. Further still, Daggett's tendency to attempt to over achieve, and fail, not only drove his brother up the wall, but at points the rest of the creatures in the forest as well. Whether it was Daggett attempting to be the best forest ranger he could be (inciting a riot among the forest creatures by banning everything fun and paving the forest over in linoleum,) or whether it was pestering everyone via his persona as Muscular Beaver (some people just don't how to save the day,) Dag was often being neurotic and annoying, sometimes intentionally, which at points incited Norb to match said level insanity just to bring Dag back around to reality. The end result of this was some great humor with the occasional obscure reference or parody adding some extra flavor as well.
"The Angry Beavers" enjoyed a reasonably successful run on Nick, though it was not without controversy. "Alley Oops," the season two finale, contained the phrase "shut up," which was deemed offensive by Nick, and rather than re-dubbing it right off the bat, they simply muted "shut." However, many assumed that something far more offensive had been muted, so for first time since "Ren and Stimpy," Nick altered a line between airings by re-dubbing it as "shush up." The issues that controversy generated between the show's staff and Nick had calmed, until Nick decided to end the series early, slicing an episode from the production run. The staff fired back with "Bye Bye Beavers," a caustic satire on the Nickelodeon's habit of canceling a show after a reasonably successful run, then rerunning it ad-infinitum as if it were new. Nick, of course, never aired the episode. The show did run for 4 years though, from 1997-2001, and the unaired episodes might some day turn up on Nicktoons TV (though they did air internationally.) It might be over shadowed by the more mainstream and mass-marketable Nicktoons, but it's blend of sibling rivalry and sometimes subversive and offbeat humor make it a great Nicktoon nonetheless. Besides, how many other Nicktoons did an episode entirely in Spanish with subtitles? None, outside of "The Angry Beavers."
